San Bartolomeo in Legio retreat was rebuilt by Pietro da Morrone in the mid-thirteenth century, taking advantage of a rocky ledge along the hillside overlooking the Valley of Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit). The oratory is almost entirely set in the rock; above a small sixteenth century altar there is a niche containing a statue of San Bartolomeo dating back to nineteenth century, made of fig wood. Inside the retreat, under a squared stone, there is a small water spring attributed to a miracle of the Saint, who made it flow by beating the ground with a chain of the church and by virtue of that, this water is said to have healing properties . San Bartolomeo is celebrated in Roccamorice on 25th August, carrying the small statue in procession up to the parish church. On the facade of the small church, visitors can appreciate two frescoes of the thirteenth century: a Virgin Mary with baby Jesus and a blessing Christ. In 1320 the hermitage was still inhabited but, during the fourteenth century, it was gradually abandoned. |
