Santo Spirito a Majella retreat is one of the most important monasteries of the Majella, of great charm and appeal as it is situated at the foot of an impressive rock face. The original nucleus, carved into the rock and located below the present church, was probably inhabited before 1000. In 1053 it hosted the future Pope Vittore III. In the mid-thirteenth century Pietro da Morrone, the future pope Celestine V, performs his work of reconstruction also in this reatreat, becoming the "mother-house" of the Order of Santo Spirito of Maiella (later called Celestine order). Abandoned in the 14th century, it was restored and enlarged in the late XVI th century. When the Celestine Order was abolished in 1807, the abbey was again abandoned. The complex is composed of three parts: the first with the Church, the ancient retreat carved into the rock and a housing wing built on two levels; the second consists of the monastery restrooms; then the guest house, also called House of the Prince as it was built by Lord Marino IV Caracciolo, who in the 17th century retreated there in meditation, in addition to the spectacular flight of steps carved into the rock leading to the oratory of the Maddalena.
