The structure, partly masonry (XII century) and partly carved into the rock, served as a cenoby for the monks of San Liberatore and afterwards it became a grange of the monastery, where the agricultural and pastoral interests of the same were minded. The hermitage is a landmark of pastoral devotion that still practices there the ritual rubbing of the stone in the niche where it is said that the Saint slept.
From this environment entirely built into the rock, visitors can enter a cave and an underground passage. In the Church, located outside the original hermitage, there is on the altar an interesting statue of the hermit saint, covered only by a beard and long white hair. On June 12th, the site is visited by an impressive mumber of pilgrims who carry the statue of Sant'Onofrio in procession to the Parish Church of Serramonacesca |
